What is the difference between porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and all-ceramic crowns?

1. Different hardness and material
The hardness of porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns is greater than that of human tooth enamel and is more brittle, which can cause wear on the opposing teeth. Its inner crown is a metal crown. The hardness of all-ceramic crowns is slightly softer compared to porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, similar to enamel, and does not cause wear on opposing teeth. Its inner crown is an all-ceramic crown.
2. Different biocompatibility
All-ceramic crowns contain no metal, so they are not corroded by acidic or alkaline substances and do not cause allergies. However, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns have a metal base, making them very susceptible to corrosion by acidic or alkaline substances.
3. Different aesthetic appearance
All-ceramic crowns have a transparent appearance similar to natural teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns have an opaque metal inner crown, which requires opaque porcelain to cover the metal base, affecting the transparency of the restoration. This results in a noticeable chalky, pale, and artificial look after cosmetic treatment, with a "black line" at the gum line caused by the metal base, affecting aesthetics. All-ceramic crowns solve this problem with good transparency and refractive properties combined with a high-strength inner crown, allowing for a better aesthetic effect at the gum line.
